What is the Spatz3 Adjustable Gastric Balloon?

The Spatz3 is a saline-filled intragastric balloon system designed to help with weight loss by occupying part of the stomach and delaying gastric emptying. Uniquely, it is the only adjustable gastric balloon on the market, meaning the volume of the balloon can be changed (either increased or decreased) during the treatment period.

It is also approved for a longer implantation period (up to 12 months in many markets) compared to many other gastric balloons.

When is the Spatz3 Recommended?

Here are key indications when this device may be considered:

  • For patients with BMI ≥ 27 kg/m² (or BMI ≥ 30 with weight-related comorbidities) who have not achieved lasting results with diet, exercise or medications.
  • For patients seeking a non-surgical, reversible weight-loss intervention (as an alternative or bridge to bariatric surgery).
  • For individuals who need extra support to overcome weight-loss plateaus — the adjustable feature allows renewed weight-loss effect by volume up-adjustment.

How is the Spatz3 Performed?

The procedure is endoscopic, minimally invasive and typically done on an outpatient basis. Under mild sedation, a deflated balloon is inserted through the mouth into the stomach via endoscope, then filled with saline. The insertion itself takes around 15–20 minutes, after which the patient is monitored for a short period and discharged. Adjustments to balloon volume (increase or decrease) can be made during the 12-month treatment period to optimise tolerance and results.

What to Expect During Recovery After Spatz3?

After placement, patients usually receive instructions on dietary progression starting with liquids, then pureed and soft foods, then regular textures. They are monitored regularly with follow-ups including dietary counselling, lifestyle support and periodic check-ins. Because the balloon stays in place for many months, patients have a longer timeframe to adopt new eating behaviours and habits.

What Are the Risks of Spatz3?

Potential risks may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort during the first few days
  • Balloon intolerance necessitating volume decrease or removal
  • Balloon migration, deflation or early removal in rare cases
  • Rare serious adverse events such as obstruction or perforation (though incidence remains low)

What Are the Benefits of Spatz3?

The potential benefits include:

  • Significant weight loss, often higher than non-adjustable balloons (studies show up to approximately 15%+ total body weight loss)
  • Ability to adjust the balloon both up (for renewed effect) and down (for intolerance) for tailored therapy
  • Extended implantation time (up to 12 months) gives more time for behaviour change and habit formation
  • Non-surgical, reversible procedure. No permanent anatomical changes and shorter recovery than major bariatric surgery
